Marlowe knew he was a target by several hostile men, and he may have staged his own death in order to be free. He had many friends in high places, and these friends had the power to make Marlowe disappear for good. Marlowe was close with the queens Lord Treasurer, Lord Burghley. Lord Burghley was of high power and had helped Marlowe out before. A man under Burghley's control was said to have escorted a group of men across the river outside the location of Marlowe’s supposed death, and this group went right past Marlowe’s home town.
